New Delhi: Wearable continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors are revolutionizing the treatment of diabetes with the introduction of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare sector. AI-based software continuously captures data for 14 days, and through a `time in range` parameter, it measures the amount of time spent in the target blood glucose range, between 70 and 180 mg/dL.

Dr. Sweta Budyal, Consultant, Diabetology & Endocrinology, Fortis Hospital Mulund, stated that CGM is usually recommended in the outpatient department. For patients whose blood sugar levels rise every day, CGM helps in providing a clear image, which in turn helps in altering the treatment plan. She added that CGMs are especially helpful in patients with nocturnal hypoglycemia, pregnant women, patients who have inexplicably low sugars, someone who has no sugars, and individuals who are mild on many daily doses of insulin.

However, Dr. Anil Bhoraskar, a senior diabetologist at SL Raheja Hospital in Mahim and secretary of the Diabetic Association of India, stated that there are many situations where the sensor reading can be wrong. Hence, CGMs should only be recommended to those patients who have no financial constraints.

Experts believe that maintaining individual glycemic variability without medications is dangerous and can lead to serious complications. Therefore, in todays society, doctors recommend using CGM monitoring devices at home. The patients are instructed to review their diet and determine what is healthy for them by consulting the reader to keep track of their sugar levels.

According to Manan Chandan, Senior Director of New Initiatives at HealthifyMe, "Users can use CGM to continuously monitor their blood glucose levels and learn which foods and activities are most effective for them."
